Wordsworth’s poetry had a huge impact in his own time, and it still speaks to us today.  At Dove Cottage is the world’s greatest collection of Wordsworth’s original manuscripts, in the very place that they were first written.

By Reimagining Wordsworth, we will bring these manuscripts vividly to life.  We will give a glimpse into Wordsworth’s creative process, revealing his revisions and frustrations, and his constant search for perfection.

Wordsworth’s poetry will be at the heart of everything we do.

'We can trace the formation of individual letters, follow the order of deletions and additions, and sense the state of mind of the author through their hurried or carefully-written handwriting. Above all else, a manuscript is a tangible and powerful link to that other person.'

My connection to Wordsworth seemed so much deeper when I was able to see things he actually penned. I loved trying to interpret his handwriting and was thrilled that his poetry existed in forms other than a neatly printed literature book.

I’ll never forget the almost religious thrill I got from seeing the notebook where Wordsworth scribbled the first lines of The Prelude
